Flight attendant explains why you shouldn’t eat the food on a long haul trip

Flight attendant explains why you shouldn’t eat the food on a long haul trip

This is a very important lesson for all you travelers.

Travellers may want to avoid tucking into the complimentary meal on a flight after hearing what a flight attendant who has worked in the industry for over two decades has had to say on the matter.

Kris Major has worked on planes for 24 years on both short and long flights.

Although it’s very tempting to have a meal when you’re travelling on a long flight, Kris has explained why turning down the food could actually help you get to sleep.

Speaking to CNN Travel, he explained: “The seasoned travellers, after take off you go down the cabin and you can see that they’re gone – they’ve covered themselves up and they’re asleep.

"Most airlines don’t particularly plan their [food] service around the passenger and acclimatization and time zones crossing."

So, the next time you're flying, you shouldn't force yourself to eat just because food is being offered and instead, you should be prioritising getting those hours of sleep in.

Kris also revealed some ways how passengers can feel fresh after sleeping on a flight.

It’s not unusual to wake up feeling extra grouchy and disoriented because travelling can be incredibly tiring. But the flight attendant’s top tip for feeling fresh is very simple - and may sound obvious - but it’s definitely worth mentioning.

“Cleaning your teeth is always the one that freshens everybody up the most,” he says.

Flight attendants always have between five and 10 minutes to themselves to freshen up before they’re back at work on another flight. They use this time to get dressed, wash, comb their hair or freshen their makeup if they need to.

And if you're travelling on a long-haul flight, Kris suggests booking a window seat if you can.

If you need to sleep during the flight, you should opt for a window or aisle seat if you’re willing to pay a bit extra.

As frequent travellers and holidaymakers know, plane seats can actually turn out be a huge fuss.

Last week, we told you about a man who was praised by people on Reddit after he refused to give up his seat for newlyweds to sit together.

The couple were purportedly en route to their honeymoon and asked the man to give up his window seat.

But the man specifically secured the window seat because of his ‘size and aisle traffic’.

He shared that he’s always ‘bumped by someone when I am on the aisle seat’ and on one occasion his elbow was ‘badly hurt’ because the trolley hit him.

Flying can be tiring, to say the least!

In other travel news, a woman documented her shock and horror after a passenger next to her ate an entire rack of ribs.

An image of the situation was posted on Twitter by passenger Lanna, who posted a picture of the meal alongside the caption: "No chance is the guy next to me eating a full rack of ribs plus sides on this plane gtf."

The ribs were smothered in a sauce you can practically smell just by looking at it, and they were accompanied by fries and a buttery corn on the cob.

While the food looked the delicious, it’s obvious that the passenger didn’t take Kris’ advice!
