A woman has been hailed a genius after stumbling upon an incredible find while decorating her Christmas tree – courtesy of... her former self.

Christmas is always a pricey time of year, what with presents, food and drink and a whole slew of festive events to budget for.

But one woman has helped herself out a bit with a nifty trick, which came as a nice surprise recently when she got the tree and decorations out to get her house into festive mode.

She wrote: “Decorating my tree and totally forgot I’d done this!!!”

The photo showed a red envelope sitting among the decorations, which said: “Takeaway fund! Merry Christmas!”

The woman had placed £30 inside the envelope the previous Christmas, knowing that when she went to do the tree for 2023 she’d have a little pick-me-up.

She added: “Got to say, takeaways were cheaper last year clearly judging by the £30 I put in the envelope.”

“What an amazing idea!!” one person said, while another agreed: “What a fabulous idea. Go you.”

A third wrote: “This is a great idea, I'm so going to do this when we put the tree away.”

And a fourth also said: “What an awesome idea! Def doing this next year!”

A few people noted how £30 wouldn’t ‘be enough’ for a takeaway, with many saying they forked out ‘at least £50’ for a family of six.

However, the original poster explained they only had to throw in a few extra quid, saying the three of them spent £33 in total.

She said: “Post edit!!! Lots of you are saying £30 is enough for a takeaway. We got a lamb madras, lamb jalfrezi, pilau rice, mushroom rice plain & garlic naan…..£33. Only 3 of us ate.”

Others also said they also did the same, while some even suggested a similar hack – packing up the tree with two bottles of wine, ready for you to drink while decorating the next year.

One person said they do something similar but with wine.

One said: “Such a great idea. Put money and wine away with the decorations so when you decorate next year you find it and get the takeaway and wine to help you stay sane.”

Another added: “I do this too! Takeaway and tree trimming night is a tradition for us!! Can't remember how much is in our envelope... might not be enough!”
