Pizza For Breakfast Could Be Healthier Than Cereal, Dietitian Claims
We can't be the only ones who enjoy a cheeky slice of pizza the morning after the night before - and now it seems we may have been onto something all this time.
A dietitian hit the press this week after claiming that a slice of pizza could be just as healthy as a bowl of cereal - and tbh we're very here for it.
Chelsey Amer told ABC News: "Pizza can be a more balanced breakfast option than many sugar-filled breakfast cereals.
"A slice of plain cheese pizza contains a balance of carbs, protein, and fat. A bowl of sugary cereal with low fat milk is largely sugar and extremely carb-heavy."
While we're not encouraging you to eat a margarita every morning (sorry), Chelsey points out that in some cases it's a healthier option than a bowl of sugary cereal.
Instead, she encourages diners to "focus on a balance of high fiber carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats to stay full throughout the morning."
Chelsey isn't the first to extol the virtues of pizza for breakfast, with a 2018 study showing up the same findings.
The Daily Meal checked this with a dietitian, who confirmed it: "You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories," explained Chelsey Amer, MS, RDN, CDN.
She continued: "However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning." She was quick to point out that it's not the 'most nutritious option'. But when compared with a bowl of sugary flakes, it's a more balanced meal.
"Plus, a slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash," she concluded.
Of course, life's too short to waste time counting calories - but if you needed another excuse to enjoy a 'chilled' slice of pepperoni, then you're welcome.
