An actor who was part of a graphic unsimulated sex scene has opened up on the strange way he prepared.

Now, we're all used to seeing sex scenes on TV and in the cinema by now, and we know that most of the time the actors aren't actually going at it, no matter how real it might seem.

It's actually a heavily choreographed performance, almost like a dance routine, with the director often taking advantage of clever camera angles, specialised garments like pads or modesty pouches, and intimacy coordinators on set to create the perfect illusion.

However, believe it or not, sometimes when a sex scene looks a bit too real, it could be because it actually is.

There are a number of movies that used unsimulated sex scenes, which is when the actors genuinely perform the depicted sex acts, rather than simulating them.

Understandably, unsimulated sex scenes appearing in non-pornographic movies has proved controversy since cinema began, but the reason why they're used is usually because actors feel like it would make it more believable that way, or the director has a specific vision in mind.

Two stars who took part in a famous unsimulated sex scene were Vincent Gallo and Chloë Sevigny, who in 2003 starred opposite each other in the movie The Brown Bunny.

Gallo directed the erotic thriller, and played the lead role of professional motorcycle racer Bud Clay (Gallo) who heads from New Hampshire to California to race again. Along the way, he meets different women who 'provide him with the cure to his own loneliness' - but only one specific woman from his past named Daisy (Sevigny) can actually satisfy him.

In one scene, Sevigny performed unsimulated oral sex on Gallo, which the actress later described as being 'all very complicated'. And Gallo previously revealed the odd way he 'prepared' for the controversial scene.

During a news conference at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for The Brown Bunny’s release, he said: “What I did was drink a lot of pineapple juice!”

He clarified: “Pineapple juice makes everything taste better, and I tried to stay as clean as I could."

Gallo went on to admit that the scene in question was 'the most complex' and 'most evolved' thing that he's ever done.

Meanwhile, speaking of her role, Sevigny told IndieWire in 2017: "I think it was a way of kind of reclaiming myself, which sounds odd, but after the celebrity and stuff, being like, 'No, that’s not who I am, I’m this other thing, and this is what I stand for'.

"Or wanting to push the envelope."

As per Huffpost, Sevigny previously explained to Playboy: "I'll probably have to go to therapy at some point. But I love Vincent. The film is tragic and beautiful, and I'm proud of it and my performance.

"I'm sad that people think one way of the movie, but what can you do? I've done many explicit sex scenes, but I'm not that interested in doing any more. I'm more self-aware now and wouldn't be able to be as free, so why even do it?"
