Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Simpsons season 37.

A producer on The Simpsons has revealed that yet another long-time character in the animated programme is 'dead as a doornail'.

The beloved American sitcom first hit our screens all the way back in December 1989 and since then, more than 780 episodes of the show have been broadcast - so if you ever wanting to watch it in its entirety, it would be quite the binge-watching session.

For a TV show that's gone on for so long, it's understandable that a number of Springfield residents have passed away within the last three decades, with it even 'killing off' none other than Marge in a flash-forward during the season 36 finale.

However, don't panic yet as producers of The Simpsons have since clarified that it this was not canon and was simply a speculative future, after the clip went viral.

But as for Alice Glick, an old lady and resident organist of the Church of Springfield, she is unfortunately very much dead.

As per Simpsons Wiki, she made her first appearance in season two's 21st episode in May 1991, titled 'Three Men and a Comic Book'.

The character was voiced by the late Cloris Leachman and then by Tress MacNeille.

In her debut episode, Bart met Alice when he was trying to earn money to buy a collector's item comic book - she put him to work doing chores around her house, but because she paid him poorly, he quickly grew to loathe her.

She's popped up in a slew of different episodes since as a long-time resident of Springfield, however, her recent death in the show has seemingly caused some confusion.

Alice was officially killed off in the Sunday (16 November) episode, which saw her suddenly collapsed onto the piano and die during Reverend Lovejoy's sermon at the church.

It was later revealed in the episode that she left her estate to Springfield Elementary School to fund its music program.

However, there were questions over her death and some people were confused because, as pointed out by TVLine, Alice previously 'died' back in season 22 at the hands of a rogue Robopet.

She went on to make a number of appearances since then, as both a ghost and as a living woman, with some viewers left even more baffled after her latest 'death'.

However, Alice has actually kicked the bucket this time, as executive producer Tim Long told the publication in a statement: "In a sense, Alice the organist will live forever, through the beautiful music she made."

He then added: "But in another, more important sense, yep she's dead as a doornail."

Taking to Twitter to react to the news, one fan of The Simpsons wrote: "1st Larry, now Alice Glick. The Simpsons are killing off everyone..."

Another commented: "Alice Glick died once again in Season 37, Episode 7. Nooo."

And someone else said: "Alice Glick is dead... Again #TheSimpsons."

Rest in peace, Alice.
