Christmas movie lovers are only just understanding the title of where The Santa Clause, with some claiming they’re still being tripped up’ over it three decades later.
When it comes to the ‘best’ holiday flicks, we’d put Home Alone, The Muppets Christmas Carol, and The Grinch up there, as well as The Santa Clause.
Released in early November 1994, the iconic film stars Tim Allen as Scott Calvin - a divorced marketing director who accidentally sends St. Nick tumbling to his death on Christmas Eve.
Following the accidental death of Santa, the protagonist is persuaded by his son to take up the legendary mantle in an attempt to save Christmas.

Upon donning the familiar red suit, Calvin unknowingly enters into a legally binding contract known as ‘The Santa Clause’.

After completing the Crimbo rounds, the father was allowed 11 months to get his affairs in order before he had to return to the North Pole to work with Santa’s elves, as per the clause.
Eventually after some hiccups, which include jail time and a suspected kidnapping attempt, Calvin and his child, Charlie, end up smashing the following Christmas together.
The Walt Disney Pictures holiday staple, which has a solid 3.2 rating on Letterboxd, was directed by John Pasquin, and has remained a firm fan favourite for 31 years.
Despite its age, some people are only just understanding that the flick’s title is a play on words.
The realisation has come all these years later, thanks to a clip posted by Ivan Mars, a self-described ‘movie detective’.

“It took me 35 years to actually realise the movie title was The Santa ClausE vs The Santa Claus,” wrote one viewer.
Someone else commented: “And I grew up thinking Clause was the actual spelling. Still trips me up to this day. Lol.”
A third Instagram user typed: “I watched the movie again a few days ago and realised the same thing.”
The content creator’s clip also made reference to a popular fan theory regarding The Santa Clause.
“Throughout the movie you can spot different elves keeping tabs on his everyday movements,” Mars wrote, referring to Allen’s character.
“Even before he becomes Santa. There’s also one moment in a classroom and [the elf] is the only one not to laugh when Charlie says his dad is Santa Claus.”
He concluded that this must have meant that Santa’s little helpers had already chosen Calvin to be the next Santa before the big man died.
In the 2022 Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses, it’s explained that Calvin was headhunted ‘because of his giving spirit as a child, and the various clauses were created to help lead him to the job all along’, according to Fox San Antonio.
But do you think getting rid of the original Santa Claus so that Calvin could replace him was an inside job? Answers on a postcard.
You can stream The Santa Clause and its subsequent sequels on Disney+ now.
