Fans think they have spotted Selena Gomez making a 'mistake' in a new Netflix thriller.

The 32-year-old singer and actor stars in one of Netflix's latest releases - Emilia Pérez.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film follows the story of a Mexican lawyer, who is tasked with the unusual job of helping a notorious cartel boss retire and transition into living life as a woman.

Alongside Selena as Jessi Del Monte, is the likes of Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Edgar Ramírez.

Despite the movie bagging the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and having an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, eagle-eyed viewers think they have noticed a 'crucial mistake' made by Selena while filming.

In one scene, her character is seen having a heated phone argument, but also making direct eye contact with the camera.

In the film industry, this is called 'breaking the fourth wall' - this is something that is often avoided, unless the director made the creative choice to do so in the script.

However, it seems fans are convinced that the move was an alleged slip-up instead of scripted, with many taking to social media to call Selena out.

"Oops! Selena Gomez commits acting sin by looking directly at the camera in Emilia Perez," one wrote.

Another added: "Directing choice or mistake? Selena might be breaking the fourth wall on purpose for her character's depth."

However, others spoke out in defence of the actor - claiming that it would never have made the edit if it turned out to be a mistake.

One fan commented: "It’s very intentional and happens a lot during the movie."

Someone else claimed: "I think it was meant to be that way simply because there were enough cuts and angles to not have used that shot during post.

"The editors may have left it this way intentionally.

"I mean, I haven’t seen it so I don’t know that context and could be COMPLETELY wrong but as someone who edits daily, this seems to be intentional."

While another praised: "I adored ‘EMILIA PEREZ.’ Funny, thrilling, haunting and heartbreaking, it’s so incredibly well-staged and well-directed with absolutely incredible performances across the board, particularly from Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, who steals every scene she’s in."

Selena's role in the film brought on other challenges, such as acting in Spanish.

Speaking to Sky News about how she prepared for the part, she admitted: "It was very exciting.

"I'm not completely fluent, so for me, it was really incredible to be able to even just be around people who were speaking it.

"I found it to be a very proud moment for sure."

Tyla has contacted representatives for Selena Gomez and Netflix for comment.
