As speculation about her 'new voice' continues, Selena Gomez has insisted that a controversial habit played a role in the changes.
Fans had long questioned whether the actress' fair share of health woes - including a chronic autoimmune disease lupus diagnosis, a kidney transplant due to lupus-related kidney damage, and various mental health battles - had impacted the way she speaks.
They'd noticed changes over time in Gomez's tone, speed, and pronunciation, with red-carpet conversations, social media posts, and podcast appearances often going viral for this reason.
In an Instagram Live released last December, the 34-year-old admitted that her lupus diagnosis often causes her throat to swell up, causing her voice to sound different than it used to.

"I’ve gotten this question a few times," she said at the time. "The voice thing. Sometimes things happen. I get weird.

"There is no excuse; I don't really care," she insisted at the time. "I think my point is that sometimes things happen and my throat kind of swells in the inside sometimes. That's all."
Now, however, it sounds as though the Disney Channel alum is attempting to provide a different explanation for her changing voice.
Speaking on her Instagram Story on Sunday (18 Oct), Gomez put it down to her vaping habits.
"I'm not going to be able to change my voice," she began. "I vaped nicotine a lot.
"And just so everyone knows that's somewhat vaped, nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you're going through it - or if you're even trying to vape - it's just not worth it."
Gomez continued: "It's just so stupid, and it's changed my voice, so if you guys don't like listening to my voice, that's totally understandable. I don't mind.
"Just don't listen to it, just don't listen."

The Only Murders In The Building star went on to say she's 'really excited' because she stopped, adding: "And I just really hope I can keep it up. It's really hard.
"But I know if you're going through something, you can get through it, too. It sucks."
Fans have since praised Gomez's transparency when it comes to her health, with one X user writing: "Nicotine addiction is no joke. Glad she managed to quit. Protect your health before it costs you something you can't get back."
Another continued: "Finally people speaking up about the effects of vapes on this generation."
"Respect to Selena for being honest about it," a third went on. "Quitting nicotine is hard, so I hope she keeps it up."
This isn't the first time that Gomez has addressed her features having changed over time.

Speaking to PEOPLE last month, the star revealed her thoughts when it comes to ageing, claiming she's not in a hurry to make any drastic changes anytime soon.
"Getting older has been so much fun," she insisted. "I’m not scared at all. I love getting older.
"Yeah, things are going to change, and things are going to sag, but you’re alive."
Gomez added: "I think age is just a number in many ways."
