The hit millennial comedy series Girls which made stars of Lena Dunham, Adam Driver and Allison Williams is set to return to our screens.
Due to air on HBO in 2027 as a five-part limited series, the announcement will be welcomed by fans of the series which originally ran over six seasons from 2012 to 2017.
Further excitement is sure to have been stoked by news the new series will reunite star and creator Dunham – who plays ambitious writer Hannah Horvath – alongside Williams playing Marnie Michaels, Andrew Rannells as Elijah, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Jemima Kirke as Jessa. Executive producer Judd Apatow also returns, reports The Guardian.

“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said in a statement.
She went on to explain how she missed the characters, ‘but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day.’
She added, “Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower.
“And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop …”

Dunham said it is rare that ‘you get the chance to return to something that changed your life’ and how the chance to reunite gave her a ‘new level of gratitude and understanding’.
She continued: “I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together … and the chance to wear yellow mesh …”
The show received 19 Emmy nominations, with two wins including best casting.
Dunham conceived the show’s pilot at the age of just 23 and is returning to its success after having penned her memoir, Famesick, which documented the intense rush of duties brought to her by the popularity of the show during the 2010s and personal celebrity it brought her.
Her other milestones include the independent movie Sharp Stick and the Netflix series Too Much.

Head of HBO comedy programming Amy Gravitt said, “We’re thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.
“To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah is a massive understatement.
“But we know fans – old and new – will be happy to see how they’ve grown and relieved to see that they’re still the Girls we knew way back when.
