Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs has made an unusual admission about what it was like to film the movies.

Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the franchise, has spoken about the logistics of making the films, admitting he has a 'terrible confession'.

As excitement grows about the upcoming Harry Potter television series, Isaacs has opened up about his own experience, explaining that making 'big special effects films' isn't what people might think.

Speaking on The One Show, Isaacs told hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp: "It’s a terrible confession to make, they weren’t that much fun to make. It’s quite boring, making big special effects films.

"However, the pleasures all come afterwards. I see and meet people for whom their lives were changed by it, and still people are reading it and sharing it with their children. Some people say their lives were saved by it and I believe it.

"Something happened when those ingredients came together and the souffle rose that created just love around the world and a sense of inclusion."

Isaacs has previously spoken about the upcoming TV series, joking that he's already auditioned for a very different role.

Last year, it was announced that a new spin-off TV series had been confirmed, based on all seven Harry Potter books written by J. K. Rowling.

The HBO series is expected to premiere in 2026 and will be more in depth than the movies.

Isaacs told Deadline that he'd quite like to play Hermione in the TV show.

"I'm hoping to come back as Hermione," he joked.

"I sent my audition tape in and I've yet to hear."

Earlier this week, it was announced that Dumbledore would be played by John Lithgow.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Lithgow said: “Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid.

"But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

While no other roles have been officially confirmed, in December, fans caught wind of speculation that I May Destroy You actor Paapa Essiedu is in the running to play Severus Snape - a role previously brought to life by the late Alan Rickman.

Meanwhile, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were revealed as the series' writer and director.

"We have 8 hours to tell the first book, so we can dig into the real depths and crevices and how the language of magic can evolve," the pair explained.
