Any Patrick Dempsey fans out there will be buzzing to know the actor has now officially been confirmed to join an iconic new franchise.

The 58-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star will be teaming up with a fellow Hollywood A-lister in the new Paramount+ Showtime show as a series regular.

He'll be starring in the prequel alongside Christian Slater, who plays the protagonist (or antagonist?), Harry Morgan.

Dempsey, however, will take on the role of Aaron Spencer, the captain of the Miami Metro Homicide, who has a decades-long relationship with Slater’s character Morgan.

"Patrick Dempsey is a beloved actor who is internationally known for the iconic characters he has played and his performances," stated Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.

"We are thrilled to have him join our all-star cast of Dexter: Original Sin, the highly anticipated origin story of the franchise."

The series, called Original Sin, is set back 1991 and follows Dexter Morgan (played by Patrick Gibson) as he becomes an avenging serial killer under the guidance and code of his father, Harry Morgan.

The star-studded cast also includes the likes of Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt.

Fans are clearly buzzing, with many rushing to social media to share their excitement over the news.

One X user penned: "I gotta say, him & Christian Slater may make it worth watching! Who can pass on those 2 in a show together?"

A second wrote: "Hoping it is good like the original. Patrick will be a great addition."

"A Dexter prequel? Lol, need to see that," quipped a third while a fourth chimed in: "WHAT!! This is cool!"

And this is far from the only Dexter spin-off as, back in February last year, the network confirmed a new version of the 2021 limited series Dexter: New Blood.

McCarthy explained in a press release shared with PEOPLE at the time: "The Dexter saga has been an undeniable creative and popular success for Showtime, both in its original, groundbreaking form and the record-setting Dexter: New Blood.

"The series is a rich foundation for other shows in the lane of complex, subversive antiheroes that Showtime has always done so brilliantly. Clyde is deep into compelling stories and characters that will satisfy the cravings of our multifaceted audience."

Well, that's something exciting to look forward to!
