Gavin and Stacey fans just discovering where they recognise Sonia from

Those who tuned into the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special (everyone), are only just noticing where they recognise one of the major characters from.

This year's special, which also served as the final ever episode - I know, we're crying - answered the question we've all been wondering for six long years: did Smithy accept Nessa's proposal?

Opening with people on the way to a stag do and, eventually, a wedding, we all breathed a huge sigh of relief when it seemed the English and Welsh duo had finally decided to tie the knot.

However, it emerged that Smithy was in fact marrying his girlfriend, Sonia, who is quite frankly a stuck up b**ch.

This development was much to the chagrin of Smithy's family and friends, who also didn't take kindly to Sonia.

The actress who plays Sonia, Laura Aikman, has been on our screens before - and viewers are only just realising where they recognise her from.

Turns out it's a completely iconic noughties show, which we'd forgotten about until now.

12.3 million people tuned in to watch Aikman eventually get jilted at the altar, with Smithy running off to profess his love for Nessa at long last.

The actress has starred in the likes of Waterloo Road, Casualty and Keith Lemon: The Film over the years, but one role in particular is absolutely her standout moment.

25-year-old X user Michaela Shannon brought it to everybody's attention, writing: "Sonia may be the iconic role that everyone will forever remember Laura Aikman for but…

"For us 90s/early 00s kids, Mysti was an icon first.”

Truly iconic (CBBC)

The Mysti Show ran on CBBC from 2004-2005, and Aikman had the titular role, who was half human and half fairy.

The show was intended to be in one-hour long segments when it was devised, but ultimately ended up being in 20-minute bites.

Supporting cast included Oliver Mason, who has popped up in EastEnders, and Yasmin Paige, who played the deadpan Jordana in Submarine.

One person wrote: "Anyone remember when Sonia from Gavin and Stacey was on The Mysti Show? Had me wanting to be a fairy age 9. Mysti > Sonia."

Another said: "Sonia, I preferred when you were on The Mysti Show #GavinAndStacey."

A third added: "I adored her as Mysti in The Mysti Show but as Sonia I had personal beef. @LauraAikman those offers better be pouring in like crazy for you!"
