Warning: This article contains spoilers for Gavin and Stacey: The Finale

There wasn’t a dry eye in the UK last night as everyone tuned in to the last ever episode of hit BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey.

At first, it seemed as though we were in for a disappointing conclusion as it was revealed Smithy (James Corden) was planning to marry the high maintenance Sonia (Laura Aikman), much to the dismay of his friends and family.

As the couple prepared for the big day, it became more and more evident that their relationship was ill-fated - something that was arguably foreshadowed by Smithy’s lacklustre stag do, and his bride-to-be's showy hen do that left the Barry crew with a bad taste in their mouths.

Thankfully, however, Smithy eventually came to his senses, leaving Sonia at the altar before rushing off to find Nessa (Ruth Jones) to get down on one knee for her instead.

The finale ended with the fan-favourite couple tying the knot, following their small-scale nuptials with a down-to-earth celebration at the local pub.

But while Smithy and Nessa had their happy ending, viewers were less than impressed by a major shock twist, which fell as a bombshell not long into the Gavin and Stacey finale.

As Dawn (Julia Davis) showed up at Pam and Mick’s house, it soon became clear that she had gone her separate ways with Pete (Adrian Scarborough), who was now living alone and enjoying single life as a bachelor.

“Not Dawn and Pete, Christmas is ruined,” one person lamented.

Another asked: “DAWN AND PETE DIVORCED??? SMITHY MARRYING SONIA??? WHAT THE F**K IS GOING ON???”

A third added: “DAWN AND PETE BROKE UP.”

But as with the couple’s volatile relationship often goes, it wasn’t long before things took a turn again... as Gavin and Stacey walked in to find the pair in bed later that evening.

While Pete was fairly convinced it was a ‘one night’ thing, Dawn was decidedly more into the idea of making things work again longer term.

By the end of the episode, they were back together for good - well, for now - with Pete seen reflecting gloomily on the ‘til death us do part’ section of Smithy and Sonia’s vows.

Ahead of the finale airing, Davis said it felt 'very exciting' when the script finally landed, saying a lot of the cast 'felt it read like a film'.

"A rom com really, with some traditional twists and turns but made unique and brilliant in the earthy world of Gavin and Stacey," she said.

"I enjoyed picturing some of the stuff I would be doing as Dawn with Pete and I am ALWAYS delighted to read the myriad types of insults Dawn has in store for Pete!"

As for how it felt being on set with everyone for the last time, she added: "It felt fun, warm and familiar, much like the show and I guess it had an underlying sadness too at times when you realise we’ll never do it again. A unique chemistry and unspoken understanding between all the actors that makes it all flow..."
