Yesterday's episode (26 October) of EastEnders has definitely pulled on the heartstrings of viewers all over.

And fans of the soap haven't been able to stop crying after the BBC show appears to confirm the tragic fate of Jay Brown.

The character, played by actor Jamie Borthwick, saw Jay, who is grieving the loss of his wife Lola Pearce-Brown after she passed away from cancer, involved in a devastating incident after taking drugs and attempting to run away to Margate.

In the last night's episode, Billy, Ben and Callum were left beyond shaken when comprehending the potential loss of Jay dying.

Billy and Honey were keeping at Walford Hospital in the hopes that was where Jay was before they were finally let in to see him.

Callum then called Ben to let him know that Jay was in an induced coma, saying: "They said he ploughed straight into a tree. He's got swelling on the brain and they've had to put him into an induced coma.

"I'll call you when I know more ok."

Sitting beside Jay, who was not responsive, 'dad' Billy then said: "We're with him though. You're not on your own anymore Jay because we're here for you.

"We're all here for you."

Lexi, Jay's step-daughter, also sent her wishes to him over the phone in a tear-jerking call.

"I don't know if you can hear me Jay. I know you feel bad but I don't want you to feel bad. I just want you to come home Jay. Please. Please come home Jay." she said.

Ben then went on to apologise for all his mistakes, saying: "Jay it's Ben. I don't know what to say. You're my brother from another mother. Seriously, you're my brother.

"And I need you to know that I forgive you and I need you to forgive me for everything I've said and everything I've done.

Billy offered an unresponsive Jay a heartfelt message.

"Because I didn't meant it. I need you to live Jay, I need you to wake up Jay. I need you by my side, I need my brother. I love you bro. I love you."

Billy then told Jay: "You heard them all. There's so much love for you here Jay. Wherever you are now, you have to come back. You've got to fight because you have to live. Because you're my son.

"You're the son that I chose. I'm begging you son, don't die. Please don't die."

And many viewers have since taken to social media to share their reactions.

One X user wrote: "I’ve just watched tonight’s episode, most of which I spent sobbing. AGAIN. My heart is breaking for Jay."

A second penned: "Just watched tonight's EastEnders and I'm now a blubbering wreck."

"This episode made me bawl tonight it was phenomenal… I’m so glad Ben and Billy have acknowledged how unfair they’ve been to Jay," chimed in a third. "Seeing Jay in a coma like that broke my heart. He’s honestly one of the best characters in the show."

A fourth echoed: "I'm a mess after tonight's EastEnders! You heard them please wake up Jay!"

"If they kill Jay off in EastEnders I’ll be an emotional wreck," admitted a final fan.

According to the Mirror, Borthwick, who has played Jay on the soap since 2008, took to his Instagram Story yesterday to share a fresh-faced photo of himself in an apparent tribute to his character.

"RIP Jay, gonna miss you lad. We had a laugh didn't we," he wrote.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
