2026 is now upon us, and that can only mean one thing: we get to see if films of the past made accurate predictions for this year.
There have been so many movies that incorrectly believe we’d advance well beyond what we have accomplished so far.
Notably, Back to the Future Part II thought we’d have flying hoverboards by 2015, but you can’t blame people of 1989 for thinking something would be invented that could allow us to eat at the click of a button.
Sadly, we don’t have anything like that, but we’ve been able to create a hell of a lot of fast-food chains, electric scooters and our own ‘hoverboards’ with wheels.
Advert
While it doesn’t seem like much, you’ll be thankful for what we’ve got when you learn what these classic films thought would come of 2026.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The 2014 film and second instalment in the franchise of Rise of the Planet of the Apes is set in a post-apocalyptic 2026.
The film comes after the Simian flu wipes out most of the human race as ape colonies attempt to settle down and find peace for once and for all.
IMDB explains the flick as: “The fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.”
I’m pretty happy with the fact that we’ve not been wiped out with a pathogen pandemic as chimps take over the Earth.

Doom
This 2005 movie is all about space, demon-like creatures, and technological advancement.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Rosamund Pike and Karl Urban, the film focuses on the space marine group having to use a wormhole between Earth and Mars, called the Ark.
They travel to Mars on a search-and-destroy mission, where they encounter genetically modified monsters that are pretty scary.
I’m as pleased as anyone else that this isn’t our reality.

Metropolis
This 1927 film is a wild ride to watch, and even though it was depicting what life would be like 99 years in the future, it’s still wildly off base.
The creators of Metropolis thought low-flying planes, cross-building motorways and sky-high living were on the cards.
While they were pretty on the money about how the wealth classification would divide the population, the inclusion of human sacrifice, prophets, and flapper fashion was not quite on par with how we actually live now.

Children of Men
Okay, so this one is actually for 2027, but it’s worth noting.
The 2006 movie is set next year, with the theme depicting a world where all but one woman have become infertile.
With the population dwindling and society falling, one man has to transport the woman to a sanctuary.
It’s actually a brilliant film, I just hope the plot never comes to life.
Other notable films that were set in 2026 include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Captain America: Brave New World, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, I Saw the TV Glow, The Marvels, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale and Wake Up Dead Man.
So, that’s it folks! The predictions above were scary, but Earth doesn’t have monsters, genius apes, or space wars.
