If you grew up in the nineties, you’ll remember the pandemonium that surrounded a certain toy in the school playground.

The famous Tamagotchi first launched in 1997 and was quickly found in the pockets of every 90s kid across the country. They were was so much hype around them, many schools even ended up banning the egg-shaped toy.

Now, the famous gaming device is back - and millennials are losing their minds over it.

Shoppers are taking to TikTok to unbox the nostalgic Tamagotchi with followers rushing to the comments section to share fond memories of the game (and expert tips on how to keep the pesky pets alive).

On Amazon, the OG Tamagotchi has received thousands of five-star reviews. One happy shopper wrote, “I’m living my childhood again. I used to play with my Tamagotchi all the time when I was a kid. It brings back so many good memories.”

Another agreed, adding: “I remember having a Tamagotchi as a teenager, it was the ‘it’ thing at that point and I had so much fun taking care of my pet, even sneaking it to school!”

A third customer commented, "It's an original tamagotchi exactly how you remember it. I think it's so awesome of Bandai to re-release the original Tamagotchi and have so many designs to choose from. It really takes me back to the 2000s when products had so many colours and design options to fit your own personal style."

According to the BBC, global sales of the Tamagotchi more than doubled between 2022 and 2023 as millennials rushed to buy a slice of nostalgia. Off the back of its second wave of success, the UK's first Tamagotchi store opened its doors earlier this year.

What is a Tamagotchi?

The Tamagotchi Original is a virtual pet that needs to be kept alive by its owner. You must feed it, play with it, and even give it medicine when sick in order for the pet to grow.

The pets come housed in a huge range of 'shells' with different prints and colours to collect with a chain so you never leave your pet at home.

Where to buy a Tamagotchi in the UK

The Tamagotchi Original is now less than £20 on Amazon with thousands of five-star reviews.

But good luck choosing one. There are lots of different prints and colours on offer, from space themes to fruit and candy swirls.
