'Poop cruise' survivor speaks out on trauma after horrific new documentary is released

Trainwreck: Poop Cruise was released onto Netflix last week

Following the release of Netflix's stomach-churning new documentary Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, a passenger that survived the notorious Carnival Triumph voyage has spoken out.

Tay Redford was just 12-years-old when her family booked onto an ill-fated cruise from Texas to Mexico back in 2013, along with 4,000 other seafaring passengers.

Just days into the journey, however, and the Oklahoma local, her parents, older brother, and a group of family friends were plunged into their worst nightmare - literally - when a vital electrical failure flooded the ship with urine and faeces.

The incident first kicked off on 10 February 2013, when a fire ignited inside the vessel's engine room after a flexible fuel oil return line failed, causing fuel to be sprayed directly onto a piping hot surface, in turn severely damaging the ship's generators.

At the time, the passengers were just hours away from the Mexican coast, but due to the fact that all mains and propulsion power had been knocked out, the ship was unable to move, becoming stranded at sea.

There, it remained for four days, cutting off passengers' supplies to food, power and sanitation. The lack of the latter triggered a major biohazard, with raw sewage being backed up into passenger deck areas.

Eventually, the vessel was towed to Mobile, Alabama, over several days, and Carnival eventually provided a small compensation of $500 and a refund for the trip home for each passenger.

Despite the media subsequently giving the incident the comedic name 'Poop cruise', Redford says the situation at the time was far from a laughing matter. So much so, that the 24-year-old claims she was left 'hurt' by the approach Netflix recently took in conveying the event.

The bakery owner described the cruise as the 'scariest thing I've ever been through' during conversations with press, and slammed both the streaming service for its controversial portrayal, and Carnival for failing to give her family the proper support they needed.

"I’ve only seen the trailer, but from what I saw, it doesn’t even scratch the surface," Redford confessed.

"It’s just Carnival workers telling the story. It’s really hard watching the documentary come out and seeing all these people making money from it.

"To me, it feels like they’re profiting off something that deeply affected and traumatised me."

The baker - who vows never to cruise again - went on to recall the moment she knew something was really wrong, claiming her cabin was plunged into darkness, and she had to evacuate due to sewage and a lack of airflow.

"My first thought is we're sinking, we're going down," Redford continued. "That was the only thing I thought. I was crying hysterically, trying to follow my parents around in the dark.

"When we went down to our room, we were up to our ankles in sewage and urine and feces, and there was no air flow. There were no lights."

Redford and her family were forced to camp on the top deck for nearly four days with access to very minimal food and water.

"They ran out of water to give us, so they said, 'Hey, we’ll open up the bar and let people drink liquor'," she continued, adding that increased intoxication resulted in fights breaking out on board.

Redford continued of cruise ship representatives: "They forced their housekeeping staff to stay in rooms infested with sewage, withheld proper meals, and made them eat out of the trash."

She also slammed the way Carnival handled the situation afterwards, claiming: "[They] called my nana and was like, 'We just wanted to let you know there was a fire onboard. There are no casualties, but your family's just on an extended vacation. Have a nice day.'

"Carnival never reached out - never."
