Netflix viewers are full of praise for an ‘outstanding’ drama that’s based on a harrowing true murder case, with many saying they were so instantly hooked that they binged it all in one sitting.

We can’t get enough of TV thrillers at the moment, with the likes of Fool Me Once, The Deceived and Deadwater Fell all recent hits on our watchlist.

While not all of them are new, they’re being given a fresh new life after being added to streaming sites, winning over a new batch of fans.

One crime drama that people have been hooked on is an ITV mini-series that first premiered back in 2016, which is available to watch on Netflix.

Starring James Nesbitt, who people will recognise from the likes of Cold Feet and Harlan Coben’s Stay Close, The Secret is based on a chilling true story that rocked a seaside village in Northern Ireland in the early 1990s.

Watch the trailer below:

The four-part series follows a dentist and a Sunday school teacher as they ‘begin a torrid extramarital affair that leads them to make a murderous pact’, with Nesbitt playing convicted double-murderer Colin Howell.

It ended up being nominated for a Best Drama Mini-series BAFTA, also winning the Royal Television Society award for Best Drama.

One said: “I watched all four episodes. Brilliant well worth a binge watch. And a true story.”

Someone else wrote: “Fantastic show about a scandal that happened here in Northern Ireland, James Nesbitt is a genius when it comes to playing characters like this.”
