One moment in Adolescence where you can actually spot camera operator

Director Philip Barantini opened up about the incredible drone shot in episode two

Despite coming out over a week ago now, it's clear the hype surrounding everyone's favourite new drama, Adolescence, isn't dying down anytime soon.

Given the 99 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as the rave reviews online - it's no surprise that the four-parter is still firmly clinging to the 'No. 1 in TV Programmes Today' slot on Netflix.

Other than the stellar casting, heart-wrenching acting performances and the brave tackling of a number of topical issues, a massive element behind the global success of the hit series is the fact that each episode is filmed in one continuous take.

And, interestingly, there's actually a moment in Adolescence where you can actually spot a camera operator - something which many viewers may have missed altogether when watching for the first time around.

As we know, the second episode takes place at the school of 13-year-old Jamie Miller who was arrested in the prior episode for the murder of his female classmate, Katie.

DI Luke Bascombe, played by Top Boy's Ashley Walters, and DS Misha Frank, played by Fresh Meat's Faye Marsay, go from classroom to classroom asking pupils for their help in gathering further information about the case.

In the final moments of the episode, the camera impressively takes off and flies through the sky over the town before eventually landing next to Stephen Graham, who plays Jamie's father Eddie, as he brings flowers to the site of Katie's tragic death.

Philip Barantini, the director of Adolescence, has since opened up about shooting the scene and revealed exactly where eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot cinematographer, Matthew Lewis.

"As Ashley [Walters, as DI Bascombe] leaves in his car, we have a team coming up behind Matt, who clip the camera to a drone with a hook," he told the Guardian. "Then we fly the drone over the town."

The director continued: "In the meantime, Matt legs it into a van. He drives to the end site, catches the drone with two other people, disconnects it and starts walking towards Stephen’s face."

There was clearly no room for Lewis to mess up any of his movement as Barantini added: "If you watch it again, you’ll see his van drive into the car park as the drone comes in to land."

Even more interestingly, the shot almost didn't happen as the director revealed: "The original idea was that the drone would just take off, fly over the murder site, and then keep flying.

"That was supposed to be the end of the episode. But then on Wednesday of the shoot week, Toby Bentley, the Netflix executive, said: 'Wouldn’t it be great if we could have Stephen at the end?'"

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix now.
