Some viewers of this year's VMAs were seemingly given 'the ick' by Doja Cat, who has come under fire for exhibiting some controversial camaraderie on the red carpet.

For those in need of a reminder, MTV's Video Music Awards take place every summer, and see the biggest names in pop, rock, hip-hop and rap battle it out for a prestigious accolade.

Meanwhile, some chart-topping stars are given the chance to perform live, with the likes of Ricky Martin, Tate McCrae, Sabrina Carpenter, Post Malone, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga having taken to the stage this year.

Also having belted out one of her own hits was 29-year-old Doja Cat, who opened the show alongside Kenny G with her new pop-rap track 'Jealous Type'.

Minutes earlier, the singer was spotted making an appearance on the red carpet, donning an 80s-inspired get-up.

The 'Kiss Me More' star donned an argyle patterned yellow and purple plunging dress, which she paired with some elaborate jewels, a Tina Turner-esque hair style and a hot red lip.

Whilst posing for the cameras, however, Doja took part in a stunt which saw her pull out a tube of lipstick, and continue reapplying it to her lips.

Following several swipes, though, the musician smiled before popping the end of the stick into her mouth and biting down.

She then continued chewing the make-up, which was likely a prop.

As we say, however, the moment hasn't gone down too well with a number of viewers watching from home, some of whom were seemingly left somewhat sickened by the display.

One X (formerly Twitter) user hit out: "She’s a weirdo for no reason."

"No she didn’t just do that," another begged.

A third questioned: "Isn't this... unhealthy? Plz don't do this at home."

"What did I just see?" another asked.

"Do yall not remember the 5-minute craft hack videos?" a fifth went on to wonder.

This said, however, hordes of Doja fans flocked to social media to praise the star for her abstract means of attracting attention, praising her for having 'ate' - literally.

"Prop lipstick, probably candy she was just pretending to reapply, made for a campy carpet gag tho," one gushed.

"ICONIC," another simply penned whilst a third wrote: "Giving a bit of performance on the carpet… we’re so back."

A third group of music lovers, however, seem to have put 2 and 2 together, and believe Doja's lipstick-chomping moment served to signify to upcoming release of her new single 'Lipstain', which was teased on YouTube earlier this year.

"DOES HRIS MEAN LIPSTAIN IS COMING SOON??" one questioned.

Another predicted: "LIPSTAIN REFERENCE OMGGGGF"

"LIPSTAIN NEXT SINGLE," a third wrote.
