Scarlett Johansson reveals how she really felt about ‘vulgar’ SNL joke about her vagina

She's hit out at the 'gross' joke

Celebrity jokes can often be pretty tongue in cheek and sometimes even walk very close to the line of what's funny and what isn't.

One joke on NBC's Saturday Night Live TV show referencing Scarlett Johansson during their annual Christmas episode has potentially stretched the limits of humour, with Johansson now sharing her own views on the skit.

During the SNL festive episode last year, comedian Michael Che was behind a joke that he wrote for Johansson's husband Colin Jost to read.

The pair swapped jokes as part of their tradition which involves both men finding new ways to embarrass the other as they read jokes their comedy partner has written, but they have never seen before.

Jost cracked Che's joke at Johansson's expense, as he made a wise crack that Costco’s roast beef sandwich is similar to Johansson’s vagina.

The joke, which has been branded as 'vulgar' and 'crass' by Johansson, saw Jost say: "Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from their menu. But I ain’t tripping. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid."

As he made the comment, Johansson - who shares a three-year-old with Jost and a ten-year-old from a previous relationship - was watching his performance via the 'Weekend Update' segment backstage, with her shock at the words evident.

Jost later revealed that his spouse wasn't expecting that level of humour as he appeared on The Tonight Show with host Jimmy Fallon, to which he explained she was 'genuinely shocked'.

Now, the Hollywood actress has given her views on the joke and how she felt about her vagina being called out on national TV.

Speaking to InStyle, Johansson shared: "It was so vulgar. I just can’t believe that they went there. I was like—it was so gross. It was really gross. And, like, old-school gross."

She also revealed that she had been warned a vagina joke would be made, but hadn't pictured it to be that extreme.

She continued: "I was like, ‘I mean, it's a vagina joke, how bad could it be?’ And then as soon as the Costco photo came up, I was like, No! No, Michael!'"

Tyla has contacted NBC for comment.

The comment comes as Johansson has given an update on the future of her Marvel character Black Widow, as fans are desperate to see the red headed superhero return.

Johansson has played Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel film series for many years before she died in Avengers: Endgame. Fans have been desperate for the Black Widow character to return, but Johansson has made it clear a return isn't going to happen.

She said: "Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?" before adding that Marvel fans 'just don’t want to believe it'.

"They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."
