Ricky Gervais has revealed the one time he 'bottled it' and scrapped a joke he planned to say at the Golden Globes.

Now, this might come as a shock to people as the 64-year-old comedian isn't usually one to shy away from a controversial joke, especially at the TV and film awards ceremony, where he would lay into celebrities live on air.

Gervais has hosted the Golden Globe Awards a whopping five times, in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020 and has never once had a joke rejected by organisers.

However, he shared in his new Netflix special that there was one gag he decided to pull himself after getting worried that it would be taken the wrong way.

Mortality is now available on the streaming platform for viewers to watch, after it dropped on Tuesday (30 December).

In the new special, which was filmed at London's Palladium earlier this year, he finally decided to share the very NSFW joke - and it was about none other than Jason Momoa.

He told the crowd: "I said earlier I've never had a joke stopped by the Golden Globes and that is absolutely true. But I've just remembered a joke that I stopped myself because I bottled it a bit and I wanna... I think I was being overcautious, I wanna share it with you."

Gervais recalled: "So, I got the chance to introduce Jason Momoa. So I thought the meta joke would be to show my hypocrisy and my cowardice, I'm okay to sl*g off actors, who's scared of actors? But when it comes to a big dude, I'm not so brave."

He then went on to reveal the line he had planned to introduce the 46-year-old Game of Thrones star, and as we say, it wasn't exactly PG.

Gervais said: "So I was gonna say, 'I've got nothing bad to say about our next presenter, 'cause he's got a c*ck like a baby's arm', right?"

However, after speaking to his friend about the gag, he was warned that it might spark backlash and so decided against it.

The Afterlife star explained: "I told my mate I was gonna do that and my mate went, 'Do you think people will think that's racist?' I went 'Why is it racist?'

"He went 'Well, cause he's a person of colour', and I said 'It's nothing to do with that, it's to do with the fact he's so big that he'd probably have a c*ck like a baby's arm, right?'"

Gervais concluded that he didn't do the joke, despite having a 'great follow-up' planned, which he decided to reveal to his audience during the Netflix show.

Pretending he was back at the Golden Globes, he acted out exactly what he would have done if he kept the joke.

The comic told the audience: "I've got nothing bad to say about our next presenter 'cause he's got a c*ck like a baby's arm', before following up with: 'Unlike Peter Dinklage who's got an arm like a baby's c*ck'."

It probably was for the best that it was left out.
