Orlando Bloom shares details on intimate scene with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara

Orlando Bloom has opened up about filming an intimate scene with real-life sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara for the new film Bucking Fastard.

The 49-year-old actor stars alongside Rooney, 41, and Kate, 43, in Werner Herzog’s latest film, with the sisters playing twin characters Joan and Jean Holbrooke.

Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, a 'sensitive' man who finds himself caught between the two women.

Bucking Fastard is loosely based on the lives of identical twin sisters Freda and Greta Chaplin, per IMDb.

The film follows the complicated relationship between Bloom’s Gareth and the twin sisters played by Rooney and Kate.

Speaking while presenting the film at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, Bloom described the dynamic between the characters and their intimate encounter.

"[There is] such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters," Bloom said, according to Variety.

He added: "My character, the 'Bucking Fastard,' is sensitive too, and he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star also described the threesome scene involving his character and the sisters as a 'very sincere sort of moment' that he, Rooney and Kate created together.

For Herzog, 84, the intimate scene called for a hands-off approach from behind the camera.

The German filmmaker, arguably most famous for directing Aguirre, the Wrath of God, explained that there are moments when a director 'has to step back'.

He said: "There are moments when a director has to step back.

"In the love scene, I said to Orlando, 'You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.'"

Herzog described the finished moment as 'beautiful', adding that the scene has 'such charm and depth'.

Bloom gushed over working with Herzog, calling it a 'bucket list item'.

"What I love about Bucking Fastard is that it refuses to judge its characters and offer any kind of easy answers," he explained.

"That is something that Werner focused on. It was wonderful to work with Kate and Rooney; I’ve been a long admirer of both of them. We had a lot of fun in Dublin. It was a great experience and certainly a bucket-list opportunity to work with someone like Werner and such a phenomenal cast."

The three siblings first brought the film to the Venice Film Festival, where Bucking Fastard premiered it earlier this month (3 September).

The film also stars the likes of Domhnall Gleeson, Simon Delaney and Michael Hough alongside Bloom, Rooney and Kate.
