Nelly Furtado furiously defended after cruel trolls criticise her body during latest appearance

The 'I'm Like A Bird' hit-maker wowed at Boardmasters Festival over the weekend (9 August)

Nelly Furtado has been furiously defended by fans after cruel internet trolls took it upon themselves to offer up their completely unsolicited opinions criticising her body during her latest appearance.

For many of us, the 46-year-old Canadian singer - famous for smash-hits like 'Say It Right', 'Promiscuous Girl' and 'Maneater' - was the it-girl of the Y2K era and it's clear that Furtado is soldiering on with her icon-status after recently taking to the stage at Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall on Saturday (9 August).

She wowed in a pair of high-waisted green ruffled hotpants alongside a matching green wrap-around top and some giant furry sleeves and, in typical Furtado fashion, she doused the whole ensemble in copious amounts of bling and accessories.

For some deeply unhappy people on the internet, they couldn't help but rush to social media to take issue with Furtado's figure, but thankfully, an avalanche of fans came through to call out their misogynistic and unhinged body-shaming while showering the pop princess, who in January shared she was having a 'body neutral' year, with praise.

One X user hit out: "Nelly Furtado. Like most people, she does not have her teenage body anymore. She has given birth to two children. She is 47. Let her live."

"I have to say one thing… Watching Nelly Furtado on TikTok and there’s people saying HORRIBLE things like 'what’s happened to her' and 'belly furtado'," penned a second.

"F*ck you all. She’s a beautiful woman, and I cannot stand people 'fat-shaming' others. I’m sick of it. SICK. Just STOP IT."

And a third agreed: "As if she's there only to please men, who probably never saw a woman in their life, imagine that."

While it's nice to see fans with their heads screwed on straight rally to defend Furtado, the relentless body policing of female celebrities is unfortunately far from the exception to the rule.

Just last month, the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt became the recipient of an avalanche of seriously 'disgusting' body-shaming comments following her latest appearance.

A few weeks back (14 July), the 90s icon rocked up at the premiere of the 2025 reboot of the 1997 classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer, looking absolutely stunning in a beaded floor-length black dress - a fact which is besides the point.

While many fans praised her look, trolls - some of which were shockingly women themselves - took it upon themselves to offer up their unsolicited opinions on Hewitt's figure.

Many of which showed their sheer stupidity and ignorance even more as they posted side-by-side snaps of the 46-year-old mother-of-three now next to when she was quite literally a teenager decades ago.

I know.

However, it's important to note that despite 'how good' you personally feel stars like Furtado or Hewitt look 'for their age', 'for being in their 40s' or 'considering they've had kids' is far from the point.

The point is that women shouldn't have to fit into a narrow, patriarchal definition of 'beauty' or 'attractiveness' in order to garner respect - whether they're a public figure in Hollywood or not.

And, as alarming as it may feel to watch critics make sickening comments like the ones the pair have sadly borne the brunt of - it's very assuring to see just how many people teamed up to take a stand against the relentless policing of women's bodies.
