Fans of Katy Perry were left scratching their heads in confusion last night after viral photos were released appearing to show the singer attending the 2025 Met Gala in New York.
In keeping with the theme of this year's event 'Tailored For You' - which celebrates the museum's new Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition and makes Black dandy its central subject - the new snaps saw the 40-year-old posing in a suave cut-out suit.
The photos in question feature Perry donning a liquid-like skirt on her lower-half, and a navy, pinstriped blazer on top.

The 'I Kissed a Girl' hitmaker appeared to have paired the uber-glam look with a bronzed and chiselled make-up display, and wore her lengthy brunette tresses straight down her back.

What has shocked fans most when it comes to Perry's appearance, however, is that, in actuality, the star was nowhere near the star-studded soiree, and was instead spending the weekend with her mother in California.
The truth behind Katy Perry's viral Met Gala look
So, how were the hotly-discussed photos captured? With AI, of course.

That's right - using photos of the US chart-topper's face, a description of this year's Met Gala theme and references to all of Perry's previous red carpet get-ups, one artificial intelligence user forged the image.
And how do we know? The mother-of-one confirmed it herself.
Resharing the AI photos - which were firstly posted on Twitter - on her personal Instagram profile, Perry confirmed in the caption: "couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL‼️)".
She added: "P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of y’all."

However, some of the singer's fans fell for the controversial technology tool, and it's left people terrified over the true capabilities of AI and how it's managed to fool so many people.

Some believed she had made an appearance alongside the likes of Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna - the latter of whom also used the event to announce her third pregnancy.
"WAIT she ate this tf up her dress looks like liquid omg," one gushed of Perry.

Another wrote on Twitter: "she is the best dressed tonight. NO DEBATE".
Others, however, admitted they were left somewhat unnerved by the level of detail in the artificial photograph and what it could mean for celebrity images going forward.
"Yall have GOT to stop this omg I cannot," one begged.
Another added: "Katy Perry AI Met Gala looks must be stopped".
