People in stitches over Katy Perry’s ‘iconic’ reaction to bumping into ex

People have been left in absolute stitches over Katy Perry’s absolutely 'iconic' reaction to bumping into her ex.

The 40-year-old 'Teenage Dream' singer rocked up to Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet Tour in Los Angeles earlier this week (18 November), but ended up bumping into her former flame, fellow singer John Mayer, in the crowd.

After their surprise encounter, footage of the two, who dated on and off between 2012 and 2015, has since started circulating on social media, and Katy's fans couldn't wait to praise the way she expertly handled what could have been a very awkward situ.

One video, which has been posted to X, shows Katy sitting in the front row of a section at the Kia Forum, while John walks over and sits himself down right behind her.

Taking no time to spot him, Katy turns around and grabs the railing in front of her before placing her head down in between her arms.

After composing herself, Katy turned back to the 'Your Body Is a Wonderland' star and shakes his hand - something which fans have rushed to praise her for.

One X user penned: "NO BUT KATY PERRY'S REACTION WHEN SHE SAW HER EX JOHN MAYER!!? SHE'S SO ME IM LITERALLY SCREAMINGBDJJDJ."

A second chirped: "She’s so real how could you not love her."

"Ikrrr she couldn't hide it first but was so mature of to initiate that handshake bless her heart," gushed a third, while a fourth praised: "Queen is being real."

"I’m literally SCREAMING right now," exclaimed a fourth, while a fifth quipped: "She saw him and immediately unlocked her 'running into an ex' starter pack. Truly iconic."

"I’m glad she can laugh about because if that was me in that situation I wouldn’t totally freeze up and panic," admitted a sixth.

Another chirped: "She did an ex handshake greeting iykyk."

And a final X user admitted: "I would react like that too if I saw him."

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, body language expert Darren Stanton has since revealed his insights on the exchange explaining: "It’s clear to see there’s some level of awkwardness when Katy sees John. She drops her head down straight away as if to say, 'get me out of here'.

"It’s like she wants the ground to swallow her up. Not only is she at the same event as her ex, but he’s sitting in the row behind her. What are the odds?"

The expert added: "She went on to turn around and it looked like she extended her arm out.

"I don’t think she was too mortified. Her initial reaction was one of awkwardness and questioning why he was there, then obviously she turned around and put her arm out, which tells me she clearly saw the funny side to the situation."
