Emma Stone is one of the most recognisable names in Hollywood, but did you know it’s not actually her real name?

The 36-year-old is an Academy Award winner and a massive Spice Girls fan (more on that later) however, it seems her legion of fans may not know her as well as they think they do, because Emma’s real name is not Emma.

Stone spoke about how she ‘freaked out’ about changing her name in an interview earlier this year, and revealed what she likes to be called.

Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter alongside her co-star from The Curse, Nathan Fielder, the pair discussed what it was like when Stone won her Oscar before Nathan, 40, revealed a seemingly little-known fact about the star.

When asked what it was like watching Emma win the Oscar after 'having just worked so intimately with her', the comedian responded: "Before we continue, I’d like to say something."

He then explained the star's real name…

"Her name’s Emily," Nathan said, "but she goes by Emma professionally.

"So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on."

Emma then chipped in: "You can say Emma. You can say anything."

The interviewer then asked if anyone else in the industry also calls her Emily to which she responded: "When I get to know them, people that I work with do.

"It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG]. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago.

"For some reason, I was like, 'I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily'. Nathan calls me Em, which is easier."

"That’s a way of bridging it," Nathan added.

The interviewer then asked the Easy A star what she would do if a fan came up to her and addressed her by her real name, Emily.

"No," Emma replied when asked if she would correct the fan. "That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily."

Nathan then quipped: "I’ll switch it up. I’m going to go back and forth."

Why did Emma Stone change her name?

Emma previously opened up about her choice to go with 'Emma' instead of 'Emily' and revealed it was all down to her favourite Spice Girl. We all remember watching her heartbroken reaction on The Graham Norton Show when she was led to believe she was about to meet the iconic pop band... but it wasn't meant to be.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she explained: "Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am.

She continued: "It wasn’t necessarily because of her but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes I did."

"And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes it was."
