Macaulay Culkin has paid tribute to his Home Alone co-star Catherine O'Hara, whose death was announced earlier today (30 January).

The actress - also famed for appearances in Schitt’s Creek, Beetlejuice and a plethora of blockbusters - died aged 71.

Her agent told Variety that the double Primetime Emmy Award-winning star had died in Los Angeles following a brief illness - though her official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Taking to Instagram, her former on-screen son, Macaulay - who played Kevin McCallister in the festive hit Home Alone - shared a series of snaps of him and Toronto-born O'Hara together, alongside an emotional statement.

"Mama. I thought we had time," the 45-year-old began. "I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you.

"But I had so much more to say."

He went on to add: "I love you. I’ll see you later."

As mentioned, O'Hara played Macaulay's on-screen mother Kate McCallister in the Christmas favourite, spawning the viral 'Kevin!' meme after her character realised she'd accidentally abandoned her eight-year-old son during the holiday season.

Her film credits also include After Hours, Heartburn, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and she voiced a number of iconic cartoon characters in the likes of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Chicken Little, Over the Hedge, Monster House, Where the Wild Things Are, Frankenweenie and Elemental.

She also played Rose family matriarch Moira in much-loved sitcom Schitt's Creek, alongside the likes of Eugene and Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy - a role that also saw O'Hara awarded with a Best Actress Golden Globe.

In terms of telly, the mother-of-two also made appearances in HBO drama series Six Feet Under, Netflix mystery A Series of Unfortunate Events, comedy The Studio, and the post-apocalyptic hit The Last of Us.

Pedro Pascal, O'Hara's co-star from the latter production, has also shared a sweet tribute in light of her passing.

"Oh, genius to be near you," the 50-year-old actor penned. "Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always."

O'Hara leaves behind two sons, Matthew and Luke, both of whom she shared with her production designer husband, Bo Welch.

The pair met on the set of Beetlejuice in 1988, tying the knot four years later.
