Britney Spears has shared the reason why she shaved her head in 2007.

The then-25-year-old was in the midst of her divorce from Kevin Federline and subsequent custody battle for their sons Sean Preston and Jayden.

By 2007, Britney was the biggest pop star in the world and was no stranger to living life in the spotlight and during this era she was under more scrutiny than ever.

The ‘Piece of Me’ singer, 41, has written about the infamous incident in her upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, which is due to be published later this month.

In an excerpt published in People, Britney said: “I'd been eyeballed so much growing up.

"I'd been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager.

"Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back."

Britney had been in the tabloids leading up to her haircut because of her increasingly concerning behaviour, including attacking a SUV with an umbrella in which paparazzi were being driven.

In January 2008 Britney locked herself and her then-16-month-old son Jayden in her bathroom. Authorities were called and she was later admitted to hospital on a 5150 psychiatric hold.

One month later, her father, Jamie Spears was put in charge of a temporary conservatorship over his daughter, which would ultimately last 13 years.

In September 2021, after Britney provided a shocking and heartbreaking testimony in court weeks before, Jamie Spears filed to end the conservatorship.

Britney's memoir will be released in just a few days but it has already caused a frenzy with the singer claiming she became pregnant during her relationship with Justin Timberlake and ultimately decided to have an abortion.

The two pop stars dated between 1999 and 2002. In her book, Britney recounts the time she discovered she was pregnant with Justin's baby and explained why she decided to have an abortion as the 'Cry Me a River' singer 'definitely wasn't happy'.

In her memoir, Britney explained she had plans of starting a family with Justin, but that he insisted they were both too young to become parents at the time.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn't a tragedy," Britney said. This excerpt was also shared with People.

"I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.

"But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young."

The Woman in Me will be released 24 October 2023.
