What cocaine does to your body while breastfeeding amid Kevin Federline’s drug allegations against Britney Spears

Federline's upcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, accuses Spears of doing cocaine while breastfeeding

Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline has made a series of damning allegations against the pop star - including that she used cocaine while breastfeeding.

The former celebrity couple were married between 2004-2007 and welcomed two sons together, Sean, 20, and Jayden, 19.

Federline's shocking claims come as part of his upcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, which is set to be released next week on October 21.

Snippets released by The New York Times include bombshell allegations by Federline that Spears would watch their sons sleep with a knife in her hand, while other parts of the book see him voice concerns over the hitmaker's mental health.

However, as we say, one of the biggest claims was that Federline watched Spears do cocaine with an actress at an album party in 2006, not long after their younger son Jayden was born.

What exactly has Federline claimed?

According to an excerpt obtained by Us Weekly, Spears told Federline that she would be staying home with their two sons, but he later found out she showed up to the party.

The excerpt reads: "As we reached the top [of the venue], Jamie Spears, Britney’s dad, was standing there. I hadn’t expected to see him, so I was happy he’d decided to come support me.

"He threw a look my way, shook his head and motioned to my dressing room door. His expression sat in that flat blank space between disapproval and apprehension, as if to say: ‘She’s here, and it’s not good.'”

Federline wrote: "The first thing I saw was Britney and her young starlet friend snorting a fat line of coke off the table. Both were wearing these outrageous wigs. Britney’s was electric blue. It was surreal. They didn’t even try to hide it.”

He claims he quietly confronted the star but ultimately it was that night that ended their relationship.

He claimed he told her: "Please don’t go home and breast-feed the kids like this. Call your mom or someone. We need to get formula. You can’t do this.”

In turn, she allegedly threw a cocktail in Federline’s face and stormed out of the party.

He wrote: “That was the proverbial final straw, the breast-feeding thing. Her reaction. That’s what ended us.”

He claimed he asked his lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, to send spears a legal letter demanding that she stop breast-feeding their children.

Spears has dismissed the allegations as 'lies'.

She wrote on Twitter: "Trust me, those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here."

What does cocaine do to your body while breastfeeding?

Cocaine is an addictive stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant, and it can cause serious medical problems.

According to the New York Post, roughly 25 million people use the class-A drug worldwide each year, including an estimated 750,000 pregnant women.

The NHS advises that if you have taken cocaine, it's recommended that you do not breastfeed your baby for at least 72 hours afterwards.

This is because cocaine in any form can pass into breast milk, even if you don’t feel the effects of the drug.

An NHS guide explains that exposure to milk containing cocaine is serious and can harm your baby as newborns are extremely sensitive to it.

Symptoms can include:

  • Irritability
  • Choking
  • Diarrhoea
  • High blood pressure
  • Vomiting
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures

If you notice these symptoms, it is important for your baby to be reviewed urgently by a health care professional.

Because newborn babies have immature liver and kidney systems, they can’t efficiently break cocaine into less powerful elements like adults do.

As reported by the NY post, exposure can dangerously affect their organs and can also cause a rapid heart rate, dangerously high blood pressure, brain damage, seizures, breathing irregularities, digestive issues, developmental delays and even death in worst cases.
