Andrew Garfield and co-star Florence Pugh were a bit carried away while filming a ‘passionate’ sex scene together.

The two actors play lovers in the romantic comedy, We Live in Time, which follows a relationship over the course of a decade.

During a chat with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast in October, the 41-year-old Spider-Man actor said when he filmed the saucy moment with Pugh, 28, they didn’t hear ‘cut’ and instead kept going at it.

Emulating his own demeanour leading up to the intimate scenes, the actor recalled: “How’s this? May I kiss you now? You don’t have to, even though we’re pretending to be married.”

The podcast appearance was filmed in front of an audience, and they all laughed at the story. Pugh laughed off any awkwardness between them during the filming of the scene.

“She would just laugh at me because she’s very confident in her body and her sexuality and her being,” Garfield said about the Don’t Worry Darling star.

“Florence is Florence.”

When the time came to film the first take of the ‘very intimate, passionate sex scene’, the actors got a bit carried away. Or in other words, they’re simply amazing at their jobs.

It was filmed on a closed set, with just the two leads, a camera operator and a boom operator.

“The scene becomes passionate — as we choreographed it — and we get into it, as it were.

“And we go a little bit further than we were meant to just because we don’t hear ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe, and we’re kind of like, ‘Okay let’s go to the next thing and the next thing and we’ll let this progress.’”

But the critically acclaimed acting duo kept going for such a long time that they eventually looked up from each other and realised the camera was no longer on them.

Garfield said he and Pugh, ‘both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.’”

“I look up, and in the corner is [the cameraman] and our boom operator. [He] has the camera by his side, and is turned into the wall.”

If you want to watch the scene (and the whole film, too, hopefully) We Live in Time will be released in the UK on 1 January 2025. It has stellar reviews, with a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after critics praised the performances of both leads.
