Most people have to work hard at making one marriage work, but Akon has opened up about the rule he has for his multiple wives.

The 'Smack That' musician has multiple wives, and while he hasn't confirmed how many he actually has, one of his partners gave an interview alleging there were four.

His rumoured partner revealed the number back in 2023, speaking to US blogger Rie Wit the Tea.

Now, Akon has been interviewed by Married At First Sight icon Paul C Brunson for his We Need To Talk podcast series.

The relationship expert is known for his tough talking on the controversial dating show, and he asked Akon about the rules he has for his wives, and how they differ for him.

“Do your wives, can they have multiple partners?” Brunson asked.

Akon replied: "No”, before the expert tried to get him to explain further about why nobody else was allowed more than one partner.

The singer refused to elaborate, answering: "Only me.”

He insisted his unconventional set up was actually more beneficial for the women involved than for him.

“When the family is united in that way, the benefit is more for the woman than for the man," he said.

“'Cos the man actually has to take care of them all. He has to treat them all equally.”

He was still elusive about just how many wives he has, explaining: "They can alternate those roles [in the house] because there’s four of them or five of them or three of them or two of them [wives].

“They can alternate those roles whether it’s cooking, whether it’s cleaning, whether it’s taking care of the kids. One may wanna take a vacation.”

“A woman’s role is managing a household," he then argued, as well as referring to his wives as 'sisters' to each other.

He has fathered nine children amongst his partners, but insists that all of his partners are 'equal' as he says that the relationship 'doesn't work' if there's favouritism.

Paul pushed back, asking: "Who is your emergency contact?"

Despite insisting there was no hierarchy, Akon replied: “It’s my first wife no matter what… Cos that one is the reason you even got one, two or three.”

He has previously been linked to the likes of Tomeka Thiam, Tricia Ana, Rosina Bruck and Amirah-Iman, although many of them haven't been officially confirmed.

Tomeka was known to be his wife for more than three decades, but she filed for divorce in September of last year.

They married in 1996 before he found fame, and according to The Sun, she cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the split.
