We loved watching the crime-fighting adventures of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup in The Powerpuff Girls as kids - and it looks like we're set to enjoy them all over again.

It has since been confirmed that the iconic 90's cartoon is being rebooted, only this time the series will be live-action with a completely different feel to it.

Instead of being joyful if not slightly grating little girls who were accidentally created by Professor Utonium, the new series will see Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup as "disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting", according to Variety.

The new live-action project will come from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, with the former having also worked on the recent Veronica Mars reboot.

The pilot has been ordered for American network The CW, which has been home to other superhero series including Batwoman and The Flash.

The original animated series of The Powerpuff Girls ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The plot followed how the three girls had to save their home of Townsville in the USA from monsters and villains, with Mojo Jojo their main nemesis.

The girls also faced everyday problems many children growing up faced, including sibling rivalry, bed-wetting and going to school.

The series was rebooted in animated form 2016 by the Cartoon Network, with singer Charli XCX becoming the show's ambassador.

There's currently no word on when the series will air, as final decisions will be made should the new Powerpuff Girls pilot gets approved.

But we have our fingers crossed that we get to see some more sugar, spice and everything nice at some point in the future.

In other TV news, Framing Britney Spears is finally available to watch in the UK.

The widely-discussed series from the New York Times aired on Hulu and FX in America earlier this month, and will be available to watch on NOW TV and Sky Documentaries customers from 9pm tomorrow.
