Netflix Issues Warning Against Viral ‘Bird Box’ Challenge

Netflix has warned Bird Box viewers not to participate in a viral challenge based on the film, which sees people trying to complete daily tasks completely blindfolded.

Over 45 mililion people streamed the flick during it's opening weekend, so it is no surprise that thousands of people on social media are getting involved with the challenge.

If you haven't watched the film, it follows Sandra Bullock and her two on-screen children as they try to survive a mysterious force wiping out the entire population.

To escape certain death if they see the force with their own eyes, Sandra's character Malorie Shannon takes her two children on a dangerous journey down a river to safety while completely blindfolded.

The official synopsis says: "When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain -- if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears.

"Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they'll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them -- and complete the trip blindfolded."

From walking the dog and going to the gym, fans of the film have been sharing clips of them attempting to complete the challenge on social media.

However, Netflix has been quick to warn viewers about the dangers of doing these tasks blindfolded after videos of people falling down stairs and attempting to drive surfaced online.

Taking to Twitter, Netflix tweeted: "Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.

"We don't know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

Netflix originally paired up with four Twitch streamers to perform a Bird Box challenge where they attempted to play popular video games blindfolded, however it looks like it could have slightly backfired.
