Fans of steamy drama 365 DNI were left wanting a whole lot more when the erotic movie came to what they saw as an unexpected ending.

But on realising that there are two more books in the trilogy that 365 DNI is based on, many Twitter users consoled themselves with the idea that there are surely more movies to come.

The film, which has been claimed to "make Fifty Shades of Grey look PG-rated' stars Italian heartthrob Michele Morrone as Sicilian Mafia leader Massimo.

Massimo kidnaps Laura - a woman he saw five years ago on the day his father was murdered - who is on a trip to Italy in a bid to save her failing relationship.

Then, in another not-so-romantic plot twist, Massimo gives Laura 365 days to fall in love with him.

Essentially, what follows is a lot of BDSM, foreplay and eventually sex. On yachts. In luxury hotel rooms. Pretty much everywhere.

Along the way, there's also some gang warfare between rival mafia members.

The thriller ends on a question mark, with Laura - who by this point has confessed her love for Massimo (sigh) - suddenly vanishing during a car journey through a long tunnel, failing to emerge the others side.

By this point, Massimo believes Laura to be dead. The movie closes on a scene which shows a police car pulling up to block off the entrance to the underpass.

Many fans were left fuming by what they thought was an abrupt ending and took to Twitter to beg for a sequel.

The Polish erotic drama has been compared to '50 Shades of Grey' (
Netflix)

Others, meanwhile, took comfort in the knowledge that more book adaptations might be in the works.

"Okay I just had to make sure 365 dni wasn't gonna leave off on a cliffhanger like that. It's part of a trilogy, whew, thank god bc i was ab to shoot the tv [sic]," said one very invested commentator.

"i just finished watching 365 days on netflix,, WTF LAURA AND MASSIMO DESERVED A HAPPY ENDING [sic]," said another.

A third complained: "why would 365 DNI end like that.. there has to be a sequel [sic]."

While a Twitter user who was clearly clued-up on the trilogy said: "If we're going by the 365 dni book series, then no, Laura did not die at the end of the movie. She has merely been abducted by the rival mafia family. The sequel book by Blanka Lipińska finds Massimo attempting to rescue Laura from their clutches. [sic]"

So, what can we expect from a second instalment?

The next book in the series, penned by author Blanka Lipinska, is named Ten Dzeiń (which translates to This Day) starts with Massimo rescuing his now-pregnant girlfriend before they start a new fairytale life, marrying and living in luxury.

Things look pretty rosy, but the rival mob are still on the pair's tail, and it's not long before a Laura is in danger again.

She gets kidnapped again (we're sensing a pattern here), this time, by a mobster named Marcelo "Nacho" Matos. Believe it or not, it isn't long before she starts to develop feelings for him instead.

The third book, Kolejne 365 DNI (meaning Another 365 Days), meanwhile, sees Massimo forced to make a choice between saving Laura or their child.

Does the ordeal mean that the couple's relationship is beyond repair?

Of course, throughout both books, there's plenty of sex, too.

And, while there's no confirmation that production on either adaptation is going ahead, the hype surrounding 365 DNI is so great that that may soon change.

Stay tuned for updates!
