Investigators have exhumed the body of Alonzo Brooks, 16 years on from his death following a party in Kansas.

Many will remember Alonzo's case from Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries docu-series, which chronicled how the 23-year-old disappeared from the party in La Cygne, in April, 2004, and was never seen alive again.

Now, a spokesperson for the Kansas City FBI confirmed to E! News: "The body of Alonzo Brooks was exhumed today as part of the ongoing investigation."

While law enforcement haven't confirmed the reason they've exhumed Alonzo's body, many are assuming it means they've got credible new evidence, seeing as exhumation is far from common in a criminal case.

In June this year, before Unsolved Mysteries even aired, Alonzo's case was reopened by the FBI, who put out a reward offer of $100,000 (£78,820) for tips that could lead to an arrest.

Unsolved Mysteries' executive producer, Terry Dunn Meurer, even previously confirmed to Variety that, of all the episodes of the show, Alonzo's 'No Ride Home' brought in the most tip offs.

He said: "Alonzo Brooks was probably [the case] we've received the most emails on. Lots of theories that we had already heard when we were producing the episodes, but there are some new names that have come in and that we forwarded onto the FBI.

"There were a lot of people there at that party, somebody witnessed what happened. We just hope that they'll come forward."

While detectives are still trying to piece together the night Alonzo went missing, witness reports suggest, as a man of Mexican and African-American parentage, he was one of the few people who wasn't white at the party.

There are also suggestions that he was subject to racial slurs throughout the evening.

Alonzo's body was found on a creek on May 1st, almost a month after his disappearance. But an autopsy failed to establish a cause of death. His family has always been adamant he was murdered.

As the Kansas case was recently re-opened, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a statement: "Likely multiple people know what happened that night in April 2004.

"It is past time for the truth to come out. The code of silence must be broken. Alonzo's family deserves to know the truth, and it is time for justice to be served."

Here's hoping we get an update from the FBI soon. It's high time Alonzo's family were given closure.
