Dexter Revival Will Pick Up 10 Years From The Final Season

The hotly-anticipated Dexter revival will be set 10 years after the show's final season, the showrunner has confirmed.

The cult-hit drama series, which followed Michael C Hall as the titular serial killer, concluded in 2013. The finale has caused major controversy amongst fans, as it saw Dexter go into exile following his murdering spree.

But the reboot, which was confirmed last month, won't see the show pick straight back up where it left off.

Instead, Dexter will be set a decade after the series finale.

A synopsis of the new series reads: "Set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami."

Screenwriter Clyde Phillips, who has written for American series Suddenly Susan and Parker Lewis Can't Lose will be taking over as showrunner for the new series, which will air on American network Showtime.

Speaking about the project, Clyde told the Hollywood Reporter: "So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was.

"It's a great opportunity to write a second finale."

Fans of the original series will also be happy to hear that the new series of Dexter will not so much be a continuation of the original, but a total reboot - which will hopefully "right the wrongs" of the last series.

"This is an opportunity to make that right, but that's not why we're doing it," he added. "We're doing this because there is such a hunger for Dexter out there.

"We're not undoing anything. We're not going to betray the audience and say, 'Whoops, that was all a dream.' What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years."

The Dexter reboot is scheduled to air in Autumn 2021.
