Calling all Call The Midwife fans, we have some fantastic news. We now know exactly when Nonnatus House will reopen its doors.

The Christmas special will air on BBC One on Christmas Day evening at 7:40pm!

The award winning period drama's Christmas special will be an extended 90-minute episode.

The Christmas special was created and written by Heidi Thomas, and is set in December 1965.

At Nonnatus House, everyone is preparing for a traditional Christmas get-together. It's the hub of activity and celebrations but, as you might have guessed, things don't quite go to plan.

Amongst other dramas, Sister Monica Joan has to be rushed to hospital, and Trixie is furious to receive a subscription to a Marriage Bureau as a Christmas gift.

Elsewhere in the special, a surprise reunion for Shelagh involves her in a deeply moving birth, and the circus arrives in Poplar - which brings about an exciting adventure for Nurse Crane.

Like many TV shows around the world production as affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Filming was interrupted and new safety precautions were introduced to meet government guidelines. Despite the restrictions, the Christmas special will be on our screens in time for the festive season.

"It is a particular thrill to be able to deliver the Christmas Special on time, just as we promised at the start of the pandemic. We are very much a family at Call The Midwife, and like families everywhere, we have missed each other. We will now be putting more love and energy into our work than ever and can't wait to share Series 10 with our fantastic, loyal audience."
