Beyoncé honours Tina Turner at concert after being called out by fans for ‘vile’ reference

Beyoncé honours Tina Turner at concert after being called out by fans for ‘vile’ reference

It may be her Renaissance tour, but Beyonce has come under some serious fire for her tribute to Tina Turner.

Tributes have been pouring in after the sudden passing of Tina Turner last week, but one star has come under serious fire for theirs.

Fans of the late singer were less than impressed with Beyonce, after lyrics resurfaced of her ‘mocking’ Turner in her 2013 hit featuring husband, Jay-Z.

In fact, several fans have dubbed the song ‘vile and horrific’ as it continues to resurface online.

Many fans have been shocked by the lyrics in ‘Drunk in Love’, which seemingly reference the domestic abuse Turner suffered.

It happened whilst the Grammy award-winner was married to Ike Turner, with the ‘Proud Mary’ even subjected to intimidation in public.

In one well-document incident, the rock ‘n’ roll icon refused to eat cake with her husband then lashing out at the star.

The incident was so infamous it was depicted in Turner’s 1993 biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It, and was referenced in Beyonce’s song, ‘Drunk in Love’.

Jay-Z even mentions Turner’s birth name, Anna Mae, as he raps: "I'm Ike, Turner, turn up / Baby no I don't play / Now eat the cake, Anna Mae / I said eat the cake, Anna Mae."

Since the lyrics resurfaced, many fans have expressed their disappointment with Beyonce on social media.

On Twitter, one angry fan wrote: “Reflecting on Tina’s legacy, I’ve always been surprised + disappointed how her being a domestic violence survivor somehow always turned into a joke, esp. in rap music.”

They added: “That’s one reason I don’t play 'Drunk in Love' often, because of Jay Z’s verse + his reference to ‘eat the cake.’”

Others have made similar comments as the lyrics circulated on the social media platform.

Another wrote: “A reminder that Jay-Z and Beyoncé on ‘Drunk in Love’ say these words, mocking Tina Turner (Anna Mae) being beaten up by Ike Turner, & ref the moment he pushed her face into her celebration cake to abuse her.”

Despite the backlash, Beyonce has still made her tribute to Turner.

Taking to the stage at the Stade De France, she told the Beyhive: “If you’re a fan of mine, you’re a fan of Tina Turner.”

She continued, explaining how much the iconic singer had an influence on her saying: “Cause I wouldn’t be on this stage without Tina Turner.”

Beyonce added: “I feel so blessed that I was alive to witness her brilliance. I also feel very blessed to be here to perform once again.”
