Meghan Markle explains why she gets so protective over photos of her children

She explained that Royal protocol had a huge impact on images of her children.

Meghan Markle has revealed the reason why she is so 'overprotective' over photographs of her two children.

The Duchess of Sussex, 41, who stepped down as a senior Royal in 2020, explained that Royal protocol had a huge impact on photographs of her children.

She told The Cut in a cover story that back in the UK, she'd have been unable to pick her son, Archie Harrison, up from preschool without press intrusion.

"Sorry, I have a problem with that," Meghan said. "That doesn't make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child."

She said that when she was a senior Royal, she had to give members of the Royal Rota, otherwise known as the UK media pool, access to her children's images first.

She explained that Royal protocol also dictated her use of social media, and prior to stepping down, she and Prince Harry had to share an Instagram account with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

It was known as @KensingtonRoyal, and the release of photographs there was so structured that she had no control of it.

"There's literally a structure by which if you want to release photos of your child, as a member of the family, you first have to give them to the Royal Rota," she said.

"Why would I give the very people that are calling my children the N-word a photo of my child before I can share it with the people that love my child?" she said. "You tell me how that makes sense and then I'll play that game."

However, despite her strained relationship with news outlets in the UK, Meghan explained that she will return to social media without the pressure that comes with being a senior Royal.

"I'm getting back … on Instagram," she said.

Meghan's revelations to The Cut come after she accused another member of the Royal Family of discussing the colour of her then unborn son's skin in her controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.

However, this is the first time that she has said the N-word was used, although it's not known if she is referring to the Royal Family themselves, the press or social media commentators.

Discussing her and Prince Harry's move to Los Angeles, Meghan said that they decided to leave when it became clear that they were 'upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy' 'just by existing'.

She said: "Anything to just… because just by existing, we were upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy. So we go, 'Okay, fine, let’s get out of here. Happy to'."
