Actor Jim Carrey is facing backlash over his behaviour towards Alicia Silverstone at the MTV Movie Awards in June 1997.

Resurfaced footage shows Carrey, who was 35 at the time, kissing a 20-year-old Alicia on stage as he got up to accept his award. The Clueless star appeared to be taken aback by the kiss, which she has never spoken about publicly.

You can watch the footage below:

In the clip, Carrey arrives on stage after winning his gong for The Cable Guy, before immediately kissing Alicia on the lips. Alicia appears shocked, and moves out of shot.

At the time, it was reported that he had apologised to Alicia backstage following the incident. Tyla has contacted Carrey's rep for comment.

The footage resurfaced this week following the actor's comments about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday evening.

Carrey, 60, criticised Will after he slapped the comedian over a G.I Jane joke made about wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.

He told CBS host Gayle King: "I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren't the cool club anymore.

"I have nothing against Will Smith – he’s done great things, but that was not a good moment.

“It cast a shadow over everyone’s shining moment last night… It was a selfish moment.

He also added that he would have sued Will for $200m (£152m) and that the actor "should have been arrested".

“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200m because that video is going to be there forever; it’s going to be ubiquitous," he said.

“If anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would’ve been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested... He should have been.”

He later clarified his comments in an interview with Associated Press, explaining: “I see it as a larger issue, and it’s an issue of the boundaries being broken – boundaries and allowances and permissiveness to certain behaviours."

In response - and in light of the resurfaced video of Carrey at the MTV Movie Awards - one person wrote on Twitter: "Since you have so much to say about what happened @ the Oscars. What about your actions kissing a young Alicia Silverstone at the MTV awards??

"And she clearly wasn't pleased. Hypocrite?"

Meanwhile another said: "But what about his actions at the MTV awards and what he did to Alicia Silverstone? Is that not just as bad, if not worse?"
