Wizards of Waverly Place showrunner confirms Selena Gomez's character was bisexual

Wizards of Waverly Place showrunner confirms Selena Gomez's character was bisexual

In a new interview, the Wizards of Waverley Place showrunner has said Selena Gomez's character in the Disney sitcom was bisexual.

As I'm sure all of you are aware, Selena Gomez has been making headlines nonstop thanks to her relationship with Hailey Bieber.

But in what feels like a previous lifetime, Gomez actually starred in the popular Disney TV show Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012.

In the Disney Channel favourite, Gomez played main protagonist Alex Russo, and was very much loved by fans.

During the show, Gomez had a few love interests, all of which being men.

However, Wizard of Waverly Place's showrunner Peter Murrieta has now said that Gomez's character was actually bisexual.

Back in 2010, Hayley Kiyoko made a guest appearance as evil wizard Stevie Nichols on the show.

Despite only being in the sitcom for four episodes, fans theorised that there was some romantic chemistry between Alex and Stevie.

And over ten years on since we last saw the characters, Murrieta confirmed on the Wizards of Waverly Pod recap that he wished he'd have been able to explore such storylines further.

He said: "Easy, easy, easy. I wished we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us, which was the relationship between Stevie and Alex.

"We weren’t able to in that time, but it was pretty clear to all of us what that relationship was. And that would have been fun."

Obviously, this storyline likely wouldn't have cropped up over ten years ago, a time where LGBTQ+ representation was far less in film and TV than it is today.

Presenter of the podcast Jennifer Stone pointed this out in the conversation with the showrunner, saying that the storyline would have likely seen the light of day 'a few years down the line'.

Meanwhile, her co-host David DeLuise added: "Nowadays, that could happen."

The showrunner said that the two characters' relationship would have been developed further.

Murrieta then chimed into the conversation, adding: "Yeah, they did it Disney Channel has had [LGBTQ+] characters, and they did it. At that time, it wasn’t a thing."

Times back then were certainly quieter for Gomez, as she is now in the middle of what the internet described as an internet bust up with Hailey Bieber, the wife of her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.

Recently, Gomez spoke out and defended Bieber after she told her about death threats that have come her way.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Gomez wrote: "Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. (...) I've always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop."
