Tom Hanks plays Geppetto in the Robert Zemeckis-directed film. The original animated classic was released in 1940 and centred on a puppet named Pinocchio who is brought to life after his woodcarver - Geppetto - sees a falling star and wishes he would become a real boy.

His wish is granted by the Blue Fairy who asks Jiminy Cricket to serve as Pinocchio's conscience, explaining he can only become a real boy if he proves himself to be "brave, truthful, and unselfish".

But on his quest to become a real boy, Pinocchio ends up in all kinds of trouble, thanks to characters such as Honest John the Fox who try and lead him astray.

Cynthia Erivo is set to play The Blue Fairy in the live action adaptation and Luke Evans, who starred in Beauty and the Beast, will play The Coachman.

The voice cast also includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, Joseph-Gordon-Levitt as Jimmy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John Worthington Foulfellow and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull.

The story itself is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.

Pinocchio will join a host of live action Disney adaptations in recent years, including The Lion King, Dumbo and Lady and the Tramp.

The new Pinocchio film was announced by Disney in 2015. Zemeckis was hired as director in January 2020 and Hanks officially joined the project the following August. The pair previously worked together on Forrest Gump, Cast Away and The Polar Express.

Disney released a first look image of the upcoming Pinocchio film in March, giving Disney fans a first look at the CGI version of the world's most beloved puppet.

The new adaptation will be released on Disney+ in September this year.
