Warning: Major Derry Girls spoilers ahead!

Derry Girls has been full of wonderful cameos and famous faces from the beginning, but Wednesday night's one-hour special caught everyone off guard with one final celebrity appearance.

The beloved Channel 4 comedy came to an end this week after three fantastic seasons, and fans are no doubt still wiping away their tears.

It all came to a rather emotional end as we watched each of the girls and their families cast their votes in the local polling station for the monumental Good Friday Agreement before strolling out together arm in arm as a newscaster is heard announcing: "Yes – 71.12%. A record-breaking turnout and an overwhelming majority. The people of Northern Ireland have spoken. The country has just taken its first step into the future."

But as blubbering fans tried to gather themselves after the heartwarming conclusion, they were caught off guard by a post-credits scene starring none other than Chelsea Clinton.

The daughter of Bill and Hilary Clinton was seen in 'Present Day New York' accepting a letter that had been sent to her years earlier, but had gotten lost on the way to her.

She opens the letter to find a letter written by Erin Quinn and Orla McCool, inviting her to hang out with them when her family came to visit Derry back in 1995.

Viewers could hardly believe their eyes, taking to Twitter to discuss the unexpected cameo.

"Howling that they acc got Chelsea Clinton to be in Derry Girls. Last episode was so good," wrote one fan.

"Oh my Derry Girls can’t believe you had Chelsea Clinton in the final episode….gonna miss reliving my childhood through you," tweeted a second.

"Jesus Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey. I was expecting a Nadine Coyle cameo not Chelsea Clinton," joked a third.

"Chelsea Clinton being the last thing I see in Derry Girls was not on my 2022 bingo card," admitted a fourth fan.

'The power Derry Girls has to get a literal Chelsea Clinton cameo to close out the series…this show is truly unmatched," raved a fifth.

"Still can’t believe Chelsea Clinton turned up at the end of #DerryGirls. Is this show iconic or what? I’ll miss it a lot" commented a sixth.

And it turns out there's a specific reason why Chelsea featured in the show's finale.

Show creator Lisa McGee has confessed that, growing up in Derry in the 90s, she had also written a letter to a young Chelsea Clinton ahead of the presidential visit.

Just 13 years old at the time, McGee invited Chelsea to accompany her and her friends to the Strand Cinema during her visit, but never did hear back.

But just under 30 years later, it looks like the pair finally managed to connect after all!
