In case you’re wondering why your eyelashes feel so weird right now, you’re not the only one.

Apparently, we’ve entered what's called peak eyelash-shedding season, and there’s a scientific reason why you’re finding lashes on your pillow and in the sink.

Similarly to how we lose more hair in the spring and autumn, our eyelashes also go through an annual shedding cycle. So, there’s no need to panic if your mascara isn’t looking as good at the moment.

From what causes eyelash shedding to the best serums for eyelash growth, scroll down to find out everything you need to know now.

What causes eyelash shedding?

According to superintendent pharmacist Ana Carolina Goncalves at pharmica.co.uk, it's not unusual for our eyelashes to shed in the spring and autumn.

"While there isn’t extensive research specifically on seasonal eyelash shedding, it's possible that hormonal changes and environmental factors play a role," she tells Tyla.

"For example, changes in daylight exposure can influence the body’s production of hormones like prolactin, which may affect the hair growth cycle. This could lead to more lashes entering the telogen (shedding) phase.

"The impact of hay fever and other allergens also shouldn’t be underestimated. Spring brings a rise in pollen levels, which can irritate the eyes and dry out the skin around them.

"This irritation can weaken the follicles that hold eyelashes in place - and combined with rubbing the eyes due to discomfort, lashes may fall out more frequently.

"In some cases, individuals may also unknowingly contribute to eyelash weakening by changing their skincare or eyecare routines.

"During spring, people often switch to products like cosmetics containing SPF. For those with sensitive skin, these changes can sometimes lead to irritation or allergic reactions, increasing the likelihood of eyelash loss."

Eyelash shedding isn't usually cause for concern, unless you're losing more than five a day. If so, something else might be at play. There are lots of other reasons why your eyelashes might be falling out, from expired makeup or lash extensions to incorrect cleansing or lack of nutrition. You can contact your GP if concerned.

What is the best eyelash serum?
