What would happen if the US president dies in office

Given that President Trump has sparked health concerns in recent months, here is the protocol that is followed in such a situation

With concerns surrounding President Trump’s health in recent months, it might have left you wondering what happens if the US president dies while they are in office? Well, here’s everything you need to know.

Over the 248-year history of the United States of America, there have only been a small number of occurrences of the president dying while in office.

Admittedly, four of those were due to assassination, with the other four dying from natural causes. But what would happen if this was to occur in 2025 or before Donald Trump’s presidency comes to an end?

You might be aware that President John F. Kennedy was the last American Chief of State to die while in office. And his death actually prompted an amendment to be made to the constitution to make it easier to navigate what happens after the death of a president.

In fact, the 25th Amendment reads: “The Vice President shall become President if the President is removed from office, dies, or resigns.”

So, here’s what would happen if President Trump were to pass away before the end of his second term in office.

The first person to be told of his death would be the Vice President – who in this case is JD Vance – as he would be his successor. Only then will the wider public be notified, and flags will start to be lowered to half-staff for at least 30 days.

It’s also worth noting that the Vice President would have to nominate a new VP to take their place, and this individual must be confirmed by a majority vote in both houses of Congress.

If, for whatever reason this individual is unable to take up the role, it would then pass to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. This is currently Mike Johnson.

Now, if the President were to die outside of Washington, DC, the casket would be transported back to the country's capital, where it will most likely be placed in the Capitol Rotunda, allowing the public to pay their respects in person. You might remember that something similar occurred when Queen Elizabeth II lay in state following her death in 2022.

Despite the president being a government employee, their funeral will be planned by their own family, with them being able to be buried wherever they wish. Because of this, the actual funeral itself could last a few days or even up to a week, depending on their wishes. But, either way, it will be televised across the globe with many other world leaders gathering to pay their respects.

It will also include a 50-gun salute, each one representing one of the 50 US states.

Given that there has been much discussion over the noticeable bruising on President Trump’s hands and the possible health concerns this could indicate, this might well be a cause for concern, especially given that he just took office as part of his latest four-year term earlier this year.
