With the Christmas holidays soon approaching, many of us will soon be packing our bags and enjoying a trip away at a hotel to bring on the festivities with a bang.

However, you may want to think twice before you unpack your suitcase as there's a pretty grim reason why you should never put your clothes inside hotel drawers.

People of the internet have been perplexed trying to work out the best way to store their bits and bobs whilst staying at a home away from home, with many pretty grossed out by using the drawers provided.

One Reddit user asked: "Hygienically using hotel drawers?"

They continued: "So if I'm going be somewhere more than a night or two I like to unpack, organise and put away my stuff instead of living out of my suitcase where everything gets jumbled.

"This usually means hanging stuff up in the closet and tossing folded stuff and intimates into drawers, where they're provided, but it was recently pointed out to me that hotels don't generally clean those drawers and there could be anything in there."

They concluded: "My current thought is to go back to packing cubes (having mostly given them up as unnecessary) and put the packing cubes in the drawers, but figured I'd ask if anyone has another or a better solution."

People couldn't wait to share their suggestions, with many advising the poster stick to 'packing cubes', purchase a nifty little 'hanging shelf' or simply 'live out of a suitcase'.

And it seems like these lot aren't wrong as an expert has shared their insight into why you should avoid unpacking your belongings directly into hotel drawers - and the reason is pretty gross.

According one travel page, which goes by @travelandleisure on Instagram, you're making a 'huge mistake' if you do so.

They continued, quoting Dr Jason Singh (@drjaysonisfresh) who said in his own video: "Hotel dressers, especially those that are made of wood or have joints and crevices are a risk for bed bug infestation."

Instead, the doctor encouraged holiday-makers to 'utilise hotel closets or hanging spaces to store your clothes or just pull your clothes straight out of your suitcase'.

After catching light of the news, people rushed to the TikTok comments to share their reactions to Dr Singh's warning.

"Ohhh nooooo. The first thing I do is unpack my suitcase," lamented one TikTok user.

A second hit out: "You mean to tell me I’ve been risking my life for over 40 years."

"New fear unlocked," admitted a third, while a fourth piped up: "There’s no end to stuff I can’t do anymore!"

Another chimed in: "Oh my God - my new terror fear."

And a final TikTok user thanked: "Don't know why I didn't think of this!"

Well, the more you know!
