For some of us, packing your suitcase is the official start of any holiday but for others, cramming all your belongings into bags is the bane of their existence.

Regardless of whatever camp you're in, travelling with luggage is simply an unavoidable inevitability when it comes to jet-setting so it's best to be savvy when it comes to all the dos and don'ts of soaring into the skies.

Speaking of which, a pretty scary warning has now been issued to anyone using luggage tags while travelling on holiday this summer - and you're not going to want to ignore this one.

So, we already know about why you should never tie a ribbon around your bag and exactly what colour suitcases are best to avoid, but why on earth should we be so careful with luggage tags?

Of course, luggage tags are a handy way to be able to identify your bag when you're anxiously waiting at the airport conveyer belt for your luggage (all while panicking as someone else starts approaching the belt as you spot what you think is your bag).

But there are some caveats to be aware of.

Mike Harvey, Managing Director at 1st Move International, explains it is absolutely 'crucial' to strike the balance between providing essential contact information while still protecting your personal security on your bags.

When attaching a tag to your luggage you should include:

  1. Full name: Use your full name as it appears on your passport. This helps assist airline staff in locating and safely returning your belongings if they go missing.
  2. Phone number: List a phone number with the country code for quick communication.
  3. Email address: Include an email address for additional contact, especially for international trips. Consider using a separate travel email address to keep it distinct from your personal one.

And, according to the expert, you should avoid:

  1. Home address: For your privacy and security, avoid including your full home address.
  2. Details of valuables: Avoid mentioning any valuable items inside your suitcase to prevent drawing unwanted attention.
  3. Travel plans and destinations: Keep your travel itinerary and destination details private to prevent misuse of your information.
  4. Sensitive information: To protect your personal identity, refrain from including personal identification numbers such as national insurance or passport numbers. This includes avoiding details of travel insurance policy numbers.

So, if you've got your address, travel plans and any other sensitive info scrawled on that tiny piece of paper in your tag make sure to whip up a new one that doesn't make that suitcase of yours a potential security problem down the line.
