A mum-to-be had no idea that her husband had died on the flight they were taking together.

Giuseppe Stilo and his wife Federica Marrella had boarded a Ryanair flight from Turin bound for Lamezia Terme International Airport, until the plane turned around 15 minutes after taking off.

Due to the seating plan, Giuseppe was seated at the front of the aircraft, with Federica seated towards the back.

Just moments after take off, the plane was made to land due to an emergency on board, but the mum-to-be had no idea it was her husband that needed urgent medical care.

Giuseppe worked at a Ferrero factory in Alba, a town in Italy.

He was originally from Filogaso but lived with his wife, who is originally from Pizzo, in Cuneo.

The couple got married in June last year, and Federica is currently five months pregnant with their child.

Two doctors on-board gave CPR to the 35-year-old, who became unresponsive during the flight.

Flight attendants also tried to revive him using a defibrillator.

When the plane landed at 11.35am, he received further treatment, including adrenaline, but was unable to be saved despite the best efforts of medical staff.

Upon finding out that her husband had died after the plane had landed, Federica collapsed.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was in a state of shock.

It has been reported that the dad-to-be died of a heart attack, and began to feel ill just after the flight took off.

The couple had boarded the flight to visit relatives before the tragic outcome.

Hours after the tragic death, it was reported that the rescue team had suffered a ten-minute delay in accessing the airport gate, a claim which local health authorities deny.

ASL To4, the local health authority, said in a statement: “There was no delay in the rescue.

“The medical personnel on duty at the airport emergency room were preparing on the runway to provide aid and the 118 operations centre, alerted to the situation, sent the basic ambulance from Borgaro Torinese, followed by the vehicle with a doctor and nurse based in Venaria.”

"It should be noted that the first ambulance with volunteers was waiting at the gate and took about 2 minutes to access the airport grounds.

“In the meantime the patient had three doctors with defibrillator and adrenaline who were assisting him, while the 118 medical team entered immediately."
