It's holiday season, so the hacks and tips are coming thick and fast - as well as the revelation of the one item we should never ever forget to pack.

While it's exciting booking the flights, there's nothing worse than landing at your destination and realising you've forgotten to pack something crucial.

It doesn't matter how many lists we make or how many times we've done it before, we always manage to leave something behind.

In the age of the internet, we have hordes of unmissable tips at our fingertips.

We've already learned the importance of taking baggage tags off our suitcases - or else you risk your bag causing a whole load of confusion with the scanning process - and your bag might not be there to greet you on the other side.

We've also learned that getting to the airport early to check your bag in first is basically useless, as all of the baggage gets mixed up in the process anyway - so there's no guarantee yours will be first on the baggage belt.

With travel tips being more addictive than ever before, people are taking to forum website Reddit to share their own hacks that they've learned over the years.

In the r/TravelHacks forum, someone posted: "What's the most underrated thing to pack?"

They then added: "I'll go first. I absolutely love always having a few plasticware sets from takeout. I always end up using at least one per trip!

"They're so convenient to have on hand and take up so little space."

One person offered: "Ear plugs and an eye mask."

Others suggested portable battery packs, silk or satin pillowcases, wet wipes and a first aid kit.

But it was one commenter's suggestion that blew people's minds.

The user wrote: "A giant scarf: it’s a blanket, a scarf, an eye mask, a bib, a shawl, a skirt, a shopping bag, a table cloth, a blouse, an umbrella…"

What was a serious lightbulb moment for some was echoed by others.

One person wrote: "This! Can't live without."

Another said: "Yes. Turkish towel or sarong, either work. A pillow, a tourniquet, a clean spot to sit on, a wall to change behind, a sun screen."

A third added: "My Turkish towel goes with me everywhere, blanket, scarf, picnic blanket, dupatta for head covering at temples, it's an absolute godsend."

So there you have it.

Next time you find yourself having to pack for a long week in the sun, do not forget your scarf!
